Dr. Abdel-Fattah Mady is associate professor of political science at Egypt’s Alexandria University, where he teaches courses on comparative politics, democratization, Islamic political movements, human rights, research methods, Israeli politics and contemporary issues in the Middle East. He joined the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars as a visiting scholar (Sept. 2015 – May 2016). He also served as a visiting scholar at University of Denver, spring 2015. In 2004, he was a recipient of the John Randolph Haynes and Dora Haynes Fellowship for social research.

Mady specializes in Comparative Politics and Middle Eastern studies. He was trained in the study of politics at Alexandria University, Egypt (B.A., 1991 and M.A. 1997) and Claremont Graduate University, USA (M.A. 2004 and Ph.D., 2005). His research focuses on regime transitions and democratization in the Middle East, Islam-based political movements, civil education and human rights in the Arab region and academic freedoms. He is the author and editor of several books, including “On Reform and Revolution in Egypt,” and “Muslims and Modern Governing” (forthcoming), “Towards a Historical Democratic Front in the Arab Countries,” (Beirut, 2010), “Arab Regime Transitions” (Beirut, 2009) and “Religion and Politics in Israel” (1999), as well as numerous articles appearing in Democratization, the Arab Journal of Political Science, Contemporary Arab Affairs , the Arab Future among other publications. He is currently involved in projects in Egypt, U.S.A and Switzerland.

He is as consultant for Cordoba Foundation of Geneva, a Swiss non-governmental organization working on non-violent conflict transformation in the Arab and Muslim Worlds. A seasoned political analyst, he has appeared as a commentator on Al-Jazeera, BBC, AlAraby, TRT Al-Turkiye, Radio Monte Carlo among others. Since Egypt’s 2011 revolution, he has served as a political consultant to newly established political parties and NGOs, participating in efforts to raise civic awareness, defend human rights, and advise political activists. In March 2012 he has been elected as Secretary General of Alexandria University Faculty Club.
